About

Karen Lugo-Dean

After proudly serving our country for 22 years and retiring as a US Army Lieutenant Colonel back in 2017, I wanted to make a difference and continue my service to our country as an educator.  I obtained my teacher’s certification and waited for my husband to retire from the military and for the right opportunity to teach.  Once done with our military careers, we decided to move to the beautiful Florida Keys.  Looking for a good school for our daughter Delani, we came across Ocean Studies Charter School.  I fell in love!

I was given the opportunity to become a teacher for the Sharks class and my first year was amazing.  I loved the whole experience of teaching children, but what I loved the most was being able to model and instill values, such as respect, confidence, integrity, responsibility, loyalty, kindness and courage.  As a teacher, I have high expectations for my students. I am firm, but at the same time, I am approachable, passionate and always trying to make the lessons fun to keep students engaged.  I encourage the students to be kind, work as a team and never quit.
